The duo Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie brought their reignited chemistry to The University of Texas Performing Arts Center, Bass Concert Hall. Promoting their new album, these two key members of Fleetwood Mac have been touring North America since June and this was their second to last scheduled show which will wrap up in Sugar Land, Texas.
Judging by their energy and on-stage charisma, you could not tell that they were nearing the end of a 38 date tour. Buckingham, 68, and McVie, 74, both bursted with energy – Buckingham in his powerful and passionate rocker way and McVie in a smooth and soulful-songbird manner. Together they complimented and played off each other throughout the evening – Buckingham freely roaming, guitar in hand and engaging the cheering audience and McVie at her keyboard swaying and singing her heart out. Buckingham showed intensity and stamina during long solos and proved why he deserves to be on the ‘Best Guitarists’ List. He is truly underrated and we were blown away.
Their set included a balanced mix of both their new material and familiar Fleetwood Mac hits, sprinkled with a couple of Buckingham’s solo album tunes. They opened the show with one of those Buckingham tunes, “Trouble”, followed by Fleetwood Mac’s “Wish You Were Here” and “Never Going Back Again” bringing the crowd to their feet with excitement. Lindsey took the opportunity to connect with the captivated audience and explain how their rekindling came about. He briefly described the collaboration as a natural culmination created when the two rejoined their singer songwriter forces after time spent apart, both independently evolving during McVie’s 15 year hiatus from Fleetwood Mac. They said they knew it was great after only 3 songs into their first rehearsal.
Crowd favorites were “Little Lies” and “Go Your Own Way” garnering two of the evening’s multiple standing ovations and Buckingham’s explosive guitar solos during “I’m not afraid” and “Red Sun” left the audience cheering for more. A “happy surprise”, (as he described their unplanned joint venture) translated into an intriguing evening filled with both nostalgic and fresh music for the concert attendees.
