Concert Review: Sylvan Esso at Austin’s Moody Amphitheater

We got a chance to check out Sylvan Esso and special guests Samia at the newly opened Moody amphitheatre at Waterloo Park. The sold out crowd was in high spirits and ready for a night of great music in downtown Austin. After overcoming some technical difficulties, we all got what we were there for, a memorable night of great music by the North Carolina based duo.

The venue was a fantastic setting for outdoor music. After 10 years of renovations, the amenities and views from the venue are nothing but impressive. I enjoyed the openness of the venue and the lawn-seating area to the right of the stage. The acoustics and the visuals were outstanding.

Samia kicked off the night with her unique sunny indie-rock sounds. The New York singer’s smooth voice and the combination of guitar, drums and subtle synth and keyboard sounds naturally put us in a good mood. She danced, jumped, twirled as she progressed through her set. Her lyrics were raw and inspiring, dark and emotional all wrapped up into one. We can’t wait to hear more from this rising artist.

Headliner, Sylvan Esso- Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn – dazzled us with their creative lyrics, melodies and beats. Their electro-dance-pop style and upbeat summer party vibes were on full display under the veil of bright stage lights. Their beats felt intimate, experimental and almost whimsy. Amelia danced and sang onstage with a very unique black netting over bright yellow outfit while Nick dropped high energy dance beats in his own funky outfit.

The set list included top hits like “Coffee” and “Radio” and many from the duo’s latest album (2020) Free Love.

The sold-out crowd sang along to the lyrics and danced to the beat of both bands. As the night progressed and the show came to an end, it was clear that this is exactly what live music should be. A place where we can connect, dance and put our worries aside. Doing it outdoors and in a beautiful setting made us all feel safer. Live music is back and we couldn’t be happier. We can’t wait until the next show.
