If you’re lucky enough to hear “You rockin’ with the best, THEBROSFRESH” said by THEBROSFRESH just know you’re in for a fantastic time! The Louisiana raised, Austin, Texas based dynamic musical twin duo THEBROSFRESH held their inaugural CANNONBALL fundraiser in partnership with the Preacher Art Gallery for their nonprofit Tank Proof.
Thirteen years ago, Torrence and Thurman Thomas (THEBROSFRESH) began Tank Proof to provide free swimming lessons to underserved communities all over the country. In addition to swim lessons Tank Proof assists with food security. Every Saturday Tank Proof, in partnership with Keep Austin Fed, provides healthy, organic food for people in areas of East Austin. In fact, before THEBROSFRESH struck a chord in a local Austin bar the bros served the local community. At its core CANNONBALL was a fundraising block party rather than a gala.
There wasn’t anything “standard” about this event which fit THEBROSFRESH vibe in a genuine manner. It was a unique way to celebrate Tank Proof. CANNONBALL featured delectably
authentic Louisiana food, the Preacher Gallery showcased Black artists, an open bar, Industry Printing had limited edition screen printed CANNONBALL t shirts and featured the musical
talents of artists such as: THEBROSFRESH, Durand Jones, Pell, Angel White, Shvkiel, and many more.
THEBROS remained on stage as the various musical acts took turns displaying their dazzling array of skills. Everyone had something unique to offer. The musical war up was a DJ who played tunes from different eras and got the party started. The BROS kicked off the live music they are natural performers with contagious grins and great physicality, followed by Angel White rocked the place with his blend of Western Soul. Up next was Shvkiel with his buttery R&B style and his powerful, silky smooth voice. Any lover of 90s R&B would love to listen to him. I couldn’t help but give an enthusiastic “Pell Yeah!” for the artist Pell who had the crowd
truly engaged. Last but not least Durand Jones who stepped onstage with an enigmatic flair and vocals to rival any of the greats. If they ever wanted to create a joint album, I would be there for
it. They all interacted with each other and had an enthusiastic sense of camaraderie. It was reminiscent of a small scale version of Roots and Friends. The performers were energetic, talented, and clearly cared about the cause.
THEBROSFRESH inspiration and commitment to service started with their mother (she is sweet I just happened to meet her and l she made sure I had food before it ran out, lol). She
was always in service to other people and therefore built a foundation of service in their heart. They believe in “consistency in service” and that to truly be beneficial one must “insert
[themselves] in the community.” This was truly a multifaceted celebration for all members of the community. CANNONBALL will truly continue to grow, and Tank Proof will continue to inspire.
