Tonino Baliardo reflects on family, new music, and his documentary film

Grammy Award-winning global music icons the Gipsy Kings, featuring Tonino Baliardo, will perform at Cedar Park’s Haute Spot on Sunday, August 9th during their Historia tour.
In a world often defined by differences, the Gipsy Kings remind us that music remains one of our most universal languages. Their infectious rhythms, vibrant chord progressions, and spirited vocals communicate emotion as powerfully as words. It’s nearly impossible not to dance and clap along to their classic hits like “Bamboleo”, “Djobi Djoba”, their hit version of “Volare”, and their flamenco-inspired cover of “Hotel California”.
Founding member, guitar virtuoso, and the heart of the Gipsy King sound, Tonino Baliardo spoke with Austin101 Magazine about the band’s enduring appeal and their newly released album Historia. More than four decades into their career, the Gipsy Kings are embracing a new generation of musicians. Baliardo says his songs and other young band members (including his sons Cosso and Mikael) are helping the music evolve while honoring the sound that made the group an international phenomenon.
“I am proud to have my two sons touring and recording with me,” Baliardo says. “Although we have a set list, I never know what the young Gipsies will do, so every show is different. It’s a great fiesta.”
For Baliardo, family is at the heart of everything. Today, several groups led by members of the extended Gipsy Kings family tour internationally, including ensembles fronted by Baliardo’s cousins Nicholas and Andre. Baliardo says the family remains close.
Now streaming on Amazon Prime, a documentary chronicles the remarkable rise of Baliardo and the Gipsy Kings from humble beginnings to becoming one of the world’s most enduring musical acts. Looking back on that journey, he says, “Never in my wildest dreams, as a young Gipsy busking in the streets and the beaches in Saint-Tropez, did I expect to have the success over the past years that has come my way.”
The documentary also explores the family’s musical lineage, including the influence of Tonino’s uncle Manitas de Plata (aka Little Silver Hands), one of the most celebrated flamenco guitarists of the 20th century. Baliardo says growing up immersed in flamenco shaped the expressive core of his music. “Even when we sing, there is certainly a feeling of happiness or sadness depending on the song.”
His virtuoso guitar playing remains one of the defining elements of the Gipsy Kings’ sound. Baliardo credits countless hours of practice, unwavering dedication, and good fortune. “I love playing, and I am very grateful to have been blessed with the skill to do so”.
Another hallmark of every Gipsy Kings performance is the rhythmic hand clapping known as palmas. “The palmas are a very important part of our performance,” Baliardo says. “As with flamenco dancers, palmas are [a way of] expressing emotions.”
Released in May, their new album Historia showcases the emotional range that has long defined the Gipsy King’s music. The joyful single, “Big Bang”, inspired by Baliardo’s young grandson Marlon, radiates playful energy, while “Cabellero” features dramatic, passionate vocals. At the other end of the spectrum, the instrumental “Cielo” pays tribute to Baliardo’s late brother Paco, one of the original Gipsy Kings, who passed away while the album was being recorded. “We were very close”, Baliardo says, describing “Cielo” as “an instrumental with a haunting melody.” It remains his favorite track on the album.
Like the band’s music itself, every live performance moves effortlessly between beloved classics, new music, and expression. For a few hours, strangers become part of the fiesta as they sing, clap, and dance together. More than four decades after first bringing their music to the world, the invitation remains the same: everyone is welcome.
