Review: Mumford & Sons Brought Cool Magic to Austin

By Ruben Morales

Mumford and Sons brought Sierra Ferrell and cool vibes to Austin’s Moody Center. This would be their only Texas stop as they are  touring with their new album RUSHMERE.

The accomplished British folk band that has 4 billboard awards and a grammy for their 2012 album BABEL. They are no stranger to Austin, as they’ve headlined AUSTIN CITY LIMITS numerous times.

As the crowd started filling in the arena, Sierra Ferrell walked on stage wearing black leather pants accompanied by her band wearing all white western wear.   Accomplished in her own right , she is a 4-time grammy winner in 2025. One that includes  Best Americana performance.

If you were fortunate to arrive early for her performance, you truly were in for a treat.

As she dazzled and danced with her guitar through her set, she worked her crowd and prepared them for the headliner to come.

At this point, the Austin crowd was ready with anticipation, standing in every corner of the MOODY Center. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen that before a performance. The crowd’s energy was electric well before the lights dropped.

AND JUST LIKE THAT MUMFORD AND SONS TOOK THE STAGE.

MARCUS MUMFORD greeted the Austin crowd, and told them it was good to be back. “WE LOVE AUSTIN AND HAVE PLAYED ACL MANY TIMES, but this was a first for the band was playing indoors”.

M&S opened with Run Together followed by Babel and then RUSHMERE– the band’s latest song (album) that has tied them to their roots from the beginning. The acoustic guitar. drumbeat and plucking banjo along with Marcus’ melodic voice rising with every note. The stage lights flashed as red lights lit up their backdrop along  with a chandelier of neon figures that flickered above the stage.

As this song concluded, the crowd erupted in cheer wanting more and that was just the beginning.

The crowd never stopped singing along even to the world premier of HERE. MUMFORD & SONS and the Austin crowd were simply in unison.

The lights dimmed at this point and the band worked their way to a small stage in the back of the Moody, fortunately my seat was right next to the small platform  stage. To my surprise they took to it in one of the most intimate sets starting with GHOST THAT WE KNEW, CAROLINE and Guiding LIGHT. The acoustic set was just magical. Marcus spoke to the crowd as if they were childhood friends, often mentioning how they love coming back to Austin. “AUSTIN  IS A CITY THEY ENJOY TOURING THE MOST”.  He also mentioned  that every time they have been invited to headline ACL Fest they have always responded YES, as an immediate answer!! The Austin crowd cheered!!!

Another amazing moment was the introduction to the song RUBBER BAND MAN, a song collaborated with HOZIER that was released earlier in the day.

Marcus Mumford front man’s antics were on full display. As the group took center stage, he opted to run through the top tier of the arena singing and shaking hands, stopping for quick celebrations with fans throughout the moody center.

After returning to the stage, the band took flight again in total harmony with the Austin crowd. They went into full encore with TIMSHEL, AWAKE MY SOUL and the song that brought up the decibels ( I WILL WAIT)! This song had the entire moody center audience singing together in perfect sync. This was truly a night that will not be forgotten. Simply one of the best concerts I’ve seen all year.

I caught up with a few fans after the concert and this is what they thought of tonight’s show:

GIL ESTRADA-” The energy in Austin was unreal-loud,joyful ,and completely connected. There were moments when the entire crowd became a living, breathing choir.”

Lori Dallava- “As a long time fan finally seeing Mumford and Sons live at the Moody Center, my expectations were high- and they delivered in spades”!

Thank you MUMFORD AND SONS for connecting us on a grand scale. Music is something that will always bring us together.
