Willie’s annual Luck Potluck Heirloom 2024 event, on the eve of the 12th year of the legendary Luck Reunion, highlighted beautiful food from many chefs from around the country. The lineup included James Beard Award winners, Top Chef contestants, and up-and-coming culinary talents. Hosted by Chef Brian Light (Ronin Farms) there were celebrity chefs like Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill) and Michel Nischan (Wholesome Wave). There were even husband-wife teams.
The atmosphere was a casual, very chill vibe compared to Luck Reunion the following day. With only a couple hundred or so people, things were slow and intentional so food, wine, and great conversation could be savored.
The signature event started out with drinks and live music from John Muq, a rising artist from Uganda who played a chill set on the barn stage. People watched chefs cook and grill their family recipes before they were seated in the large tent for dinner. There were some recognizable people like photographer Danny Clinch, John Paul DeJoria, Jimmie Vaughan, and Willie’s wife Annie.
During dinner, chefs spoke about their recipes, families, and how meaningful it was to be there and how grateful they were to Willie. Nelson has always been a staunch advocate for farmers (and sustainability and local sourcing) and was an important part of the night. The evening capped off with a set by Jason Boland and then a full set by Willie Nelson and his band (including sons Micah and Lukas, and veteran band mates like Mickey Raphael). Nelson played all the hits including “Whiskey River”, “On The Road Again”, and “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”.
The annual event benefits the Luck Family Foundation which supports Farm Aid, Wholesome Wave, and The Texas Food and Wine Alliance. Tickets sell out fast, so be ready when they go on sale next year. Prices range from $500-$7500.
