Concert Review:Modest Mouse and Pixies at Austin’s Germania Insurance Amphitheater

by Virginia Hernandez

Modest Mouse and Pixies rocked a night tailor-made for lovers of alternative nostalgia at Germania Amphitheater on June 26th, both bringing blistering sets filled with audience favorites. Modest Mouse hit the stage first, with a setlist that mixed classics and surprises, setting the tone with “The Stars Are Projectors.” In a 12-song set and powering through 100-degree temperatures, the band showcased their deft ability to weave intricate instrumentals with introspective lyrics. Austin teen sensation Pedal Steel Noah joined the band for two songs on pedal steel guitar, adding dimension to “Gravity Rides Everything” and “Dramamine.” Closing with “Cowboy Dan,” Modest Mouse left the crowd buzzing and primed for Pixies.

Pixies took the stage with a 24-song setlist that took fans on a wild ride through their iconic catalog. They kicked off with “U-Mass,” setting the tone for a night filled with raw energy and nostalgic vibes with frontman Black Francis immediately establishing his vocal depth, acuity, and captivating stage presence. New bassist Emma Richardson aptly played the iconic bass parts first laid down by the legendary Kim Deal, with Richardson also adding haunting vocals on “In Heaven.” The band mixed it up with classics like “Here Comes Your Man” alongside deeper cuts like “Vamos” and Neil Young’s “Winterlong,” to an appreciative and enraptured crowd.

Closing with the indie classic, “Where is My Mind?”, Pixies demonstrated their vast influence on the alt-indie genre, and proved that after nearly 30 years on stage, they can dominate the scene alongside any modern band of the last decade.
