The hills may be alive with the sound of music—but for a limited time, they’re rising right here in Austin. The Sound of Music arrives at Bass Concert Hall, bringing Rodgers & Hammerstein’s beloved masterpiece to life with all the heart, fun, and joy that have made it a global treasure for more than six decades.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Austrian Alps on the eve of World War II, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a spirited young woman whose irrepressible love of life transforms the rigid household of Captain Georg von Trapp and his seven children. What begins as a gentle, often funny tale of family and self-discovery deepens into a powerful story about courage, conviction, and choosing love in the face of fear. It’s intimate and epic at once—a musical that balances warmth and wonder with history and hope.
Since its Broadway debut in 1959, The Sound of Music has become one of the most cherished musicals of all time, winning five Tony Awards and inspiring an iconic film that introduced the story to generations of fans. Its songbook is nothing short of legendary: “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and the soaring title song are woven into our cultural DNA. Hearing these melodies live—sung with full orchestra and theatrical magic—reminds us why this musical endures.
At Bass Concert Hall, The Sound of Music isn’t just a night at the theater, it’s a return to wonder, a celebration of resilience, and a chance to fall in love with a classic all over again.
According to director Jack O’Brien, “A few years ago, I was part of a group of collaborative artists who, almost inadvertently, stumbled on original conceptions for the stage mounting of THE SOUND OF MUSIC that had never found their way into production. We felt as if we were awakening Sleeping Beauty herself, and the results exposed a version of this classic virtually unknown before, and yet more dramatic, more detailed, more rapturous and more touching than any we had experienced.”
