Review: Simple Minds at Moody Center – Alive and Kicking & Touring Strong

Alive & Kicking Tour 2025

Simple Minds’ performance at the Moody Center in Austin was a vibrant display of their enduring talent and energy. The Scottish band, led by the charismatic Jim Kerr (vocals) and the ever-present Charlie Burchill (guitar), proved their legacy and captivated the audience with both their music and visuals. The world tour is in support of their latest record releases while playing a large selection of their iconic back catalog of hits.

The “Alive & Kicking Tour 2025” is a testament to the band’s staying power. It’s their most extensive North American tour in four decades, taking them across the US and Canada. They’re joined by Soft Cell and Modern English, adding even more to the show’s 80s nostalgia.

Soft Cell delivered a captivating set, with Marc Almond’s unique vocals and David Ball’s synths. Their performance included classics like “Tainted Love” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye,” and newer material, showing their continued creativity. Modern English brought post-punk and new wave energy. Their short setlist included mega hit “I Melt With You,” and other songs that showcased their sound. The opening bands contributed to the night’s atmosphere of 80s nostalgia.

Jim Kerr, 65, remains an engaging frontman for Simple Minds. His voice, still powerful and expressive, navigated the band’s catalog effortlessly. He did get some laughs when talking about how tired he was (“If you’re wondering why I’m standing here talking-it’s because I’m really f. tired”). He still cruised around the stage, knelt down often, engaged with the crowd, sometimes lying down singing, and never missed a beat.

Charlie Burchill’s guitar work continues to be a cornerstone of the band’s sound. Cherisse Osei’s drumming was a highlight, and the band was rounded out by the musical talent of Ged Grimes (bass), Gordy Goudie (guitar and keyboards), Erik Ljunggren (keyboards), and Sarah Brown (backing vocals).

The setlist included hits like “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” and other fan favorites. Energetic renditions of “Alive and Kicking,” “Sanctify Yourself,” and “Someone Somewhere in Summertime” were performed. Other highlights included “Waterfront,” “Promised You A Miracle,” and “New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84).” The inclusion of “Book of Brilliant Things” with Sarah Brown on lead vocals was a welcome surprise. The music was enhanced by the epic light show and on screen visual experience.
