Review: Spoon w/ Pixies High-Energy Vibes at Moody Amphitheater

by Diego Donamaria

Spoon and Pixies delivered a memorable, high-energy show to a full crowd at the Moody Amphitheater, making the night feel like a double feature for anyone who grew up loving smart, energetic alt-rock. The concert vibes were loose and communal, with everyone buzzing the moment Spoon hit the stage as the sun started to go down.

Spoon’s Energy and Style

Spoon’s set played like an expertly curated playlist, heavy on crowd-pleasers delivered with their signature tight musicianship and some welcome grit. Britt Daniel’s voice was jumping out of the speakers, all swagger and yelps, and the band’s rhythm section locked in as usual. The setlist was a greatest-hits run: fan favorites like “Jonathon Fisk,” “The Hardest Cut,” and “I Turn My Camera On” sounded particularly sharp, while “Inside Out” got the crowd swaying with its dreamy, psychedelic touches. The guitar work was especially lively, with bursts of noisy jams peppered throughout, showing off the band’s knack for both precision and wildness.

Spoon ripped into “Jonathon Fisk” to kick off the set, playing it fast and loud—the kind of opener that hits like jet fuel and gets the whole crowd jumping right away. Britt Daniel had real fire in his voice, the guitars were crunchy, and the band let the ending ride out with some noisy jamming, just loose enough to feel spontaneous but super tight all the same.

A little later, when “Inside Out” rolled around, the mood totally shifted—the band cooled things down with shimmering synths and a groove that pulled the whole crowd in. Daniel sang with this dreamy, spaced-out vibe, the band let the song breathe, and for a few minutes, it felt like everyone in the amphitheater was floating right along with them. It was a perfect showcase of Spoon’s range, and the crowd soaked it up.

The crowd’s energy never dropped, and the band’s dynamic range was on full display, swinging from tight, punchy rhythms to noisy, expressive breakdowns. There was even a moment for a cover, “Don’t You Ever,” nodding to Spoon’s influences.

Pixies Keep It Legendary

Pixies followed up with the kind of set you’d expect from indie-rock royalty. Black Francis was all business, launching into classics from “Doolittle” and beyond: “Debaser,” “Here Comes Your Man,” and “Hey” all brought big singalongs. It was a wild ride through their biggest hits and some deep cuts, all played with that classic Pixies intensity that fans live for.

Another standout was “Wave of Mutilation,” which brought that signature Pixies loud-quiet-loud dynamic—explosive and exhilarating. The energy in the crowd spiked as Black Francis and the band tore through the crunching riffs, showing they still have that raw power after all these years. And of course, they didn’t miss the chance to play “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” a song that blends quirky lyrics with a haunting message, performed with the perfect mix of melancholy and punch.

They also threw in some interesting covers, like “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” with Emma Richardson on lead vocals, adding a mysterious, ethereal touch to the set. Plus, fan favorites like “Debaser” and “Gouge Away” kept things loud and frantic, reminding everyone why the Pixies were pioneers of alternative rock’s edge.

All in all, their set was a solid blast of nostalgia with a fresh twist, mixing the hits everyone knows with enough variety to keep things exciting. The band played tight but loose, channeling decades of experience into a joyful, sweaty, and noisy celebration of their unique sound. A perfect night for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Final Vibes

It was a perfect Austin night: a little sweaty, entirely celebratory, and packed with great music. Both bands fit the outdoor setting, Spoon sounding right at home with the hometown crowd and Pixies delivering the feverish, loud-quiet-loud magic that’s inspired generations. Fans left buzzing, proving there’s still nothing like seeing these two bands command a stage together when the amps are roaring, and the crowd’s all in.
